How it goes

From first conversation to first report

  1. A conversation, not a pitch

    We start by asking what you are trying to change. If we are not the right organisation for it, we will say so and suggest who is.

  2. Scoping against a real gap

    Our regional directors identify where the need is unmet. We do not design a programme around available funding — that is the single feature every programme we closed had in common.

  3. Agreement and evaluation plan

    One agreement covering indicators, reporting, the independent evaluator, and the conditions under which the programme transfers to national ownership.

  4. Reporting, including the bad quarters

    Quarterly reporting against the indicators we agreed. When something is not working you will hear it from us first, with what we intend to do about it.

What we will not agree to

Saying this at the start saves everyone a great deal of time, and it is why the partnerships we do sign tend to last.

  • Programmes designed around funding

    We will not run a programme a community has not asked for. Every programme we have closed had this in common.

  • Approval over findings

    Funders do not choose our evaluators and do not see results before we do. We publish either way.

  • Imagery that trades on dignity

    No photographs of identifiable patients without consent, and no framing that presents this work as done by foreigners.

  • Money from certain sources

    Tobacco, arms manufacturing, or any company under active investigation for harm to the communities we serve.
